“Of course I liked you,” Clarissa exclaims, cackling. “God, Mike had talked about you so much, by the time I met you, it felt like meeting…I dunno, Zendaya or something.”
Alex, balancing a pizza box against her hip as she jiggles open the lock of Clarissa’s apartment, scoffs and retorts, “If you were that stoked, what’d I do to piss you off so fast?”
Inside, Clarissa makes a beeline for the fridge, selecting two (cheap but palatable) beers, as she answers, “It wasn’t like that. I just knew immediately how much I didn’t rate. I mean, Mike liked me a lot, but you two were you two.”
A beat passes as Alex grabs two plates from the dishwasher and starts dolling out pizza before quietly asking, “Is it weird that you saying that makes me feel better? Because when you came into the picture, I…could feel him pulling away. And that’s fine. That’s growing up, but–”
“He loved you, Alex,” Clarissa affirms, taking Alex’s hand, “anyone with eyes could see that from a mile away,” she pauses (winces?) before adding, “and I kinda get it.”
Alex stops mid drink, “Wait…what?”
Clarissa looks up at her vaulted ceilings and groans before answering, “Look,” she crosses her arms, clearly defensive, “maybe this is just a me thing, and if it is, I’ll just add it to my therapist’s list, but…I think I have a crush on you.”
Alex stares at Clarissa for beat before she pulls out her old HAM radio, turns it through a couple frequencies and then turns it back off, confirming: “This is real. You’re being honest.”
Clarissa drags her fingers through her hair, exasperated, “Yes, and being vulnerable, thanks for noticing. Like I said, if it’s weird–”
Alex pulls Clarissa’s hands into her own, cutting through with, “No. I mean, yeah, of course it’s a little weird, but just–tell me again.”
